Hop aboard the adventure boat

Baby and child swim school, Puddle Ducks Mid Cheshire, has been making quite a splash in their aim to teach children the importance of water safety.

They have launched the Puddle Ducks adventure boat at their Barons Quay pool and have also been going to local nurseries and pre-schools giving talks all about keeping safe in and around water.

The importance of learning to swim and to swim safely is so important for every child all year round but especially so in the summer months when being in water is such fun. The team at Mid Cheshire want to make sure children know the basics of water safety, so they can help themselves should they get into difficulty.

The adventure boat has seen children being taught all about ‘starfishing’ to conserve their energy, or how to turn, turn, turn, and hold on to something secure and shout for help should they fall in the water. The children have been hopping onto the boat for a quick ride to keep fresh in their minds all about the key actions to take.

Rachel Bateson, from Puddle Ducks Mid Cheshire, said: “At Puddle Ducks, water safety is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that all the children and babies we teach know what to do if they find themselves in trouble in the water is vital. The children have been absolutely loving the adventure boat, they have been sailing the seas, pretending to be mermaids, going to the beach – but learning key life lessons while just having fun.”

One of the key learnings of Puddle Duck’s water safety talks is for the children to understand how, and why, to ‘starfish’. If you are in trouble in the water or feel too tired to swim, knowing how to make the shape like a ‘starfish’ can help give you time to calm your breathing and conserve your energy whilst you shout for help. It’s an easy technique which is vital to being safe in the water.
