First Time in Malta? 4 Maltese Cities You Must Visit

When people talk about the Mediterranean, they usually think of Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Morocco. And although they all are beautiful countries, they tend to overshadow some other equally breathtaking countries. An example of this is Malta, which has recently started gaining the attention and the hype it deserves thanks to innovative steps for welcoming more tourists and visitors.

Malta is an island country in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. It lies between Sicily and North Africa (more specifically, Libya). If this is the first time that you are travelling in that region, you should know a couple of cities that you must visit at all costs. Grab a map and see which Maltese cities are one hundred percent worth your time.

  1. Valletta

Number one destination is the capital of Malta, Valletta. It might be a small city, but it is the greatest proof of the country’s long history. The Knights Hospitaller —or the Order of St. John of Jerusalem— were the ones to build an extensive wall in order to keep the area safe and to ask other kings for help so as to erect a powerful and grand catholic metropolis. History buffs will have the time of their lives in Valletta as they can tour around the Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, which was built in the 16th century, the Grandmaster’s Palace, where the knights used to reside, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The latter is located on the highest point of the city, which means that it would be wiser to hire a car in order to get there. You can find the best car for your travelling needs on Enjoy Travel as you can compare and contrast all the cars available for hire. Then, you can take this car and explore the whole of Valletta in the most comfortable way.

  1. Gozo

The country incorporates three beautiful islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. There is a direct ferry taking you from the port in the northernmost part of Malta, Ċirkewwa port, to Gozo. Once you get there, you will be speechless by its stunning beauty. It is a romantic and peaceful island, full of unspoilt beaches and historic sites. The most popular spots are the ancient Citadella, the Azure Window and the Ta Pinu Basilica.

  1. Mdina

The first capital of the island was Mdina. This stunning, small town has retained its mediaeval atmosphere, and every single tourist reaching the top of the hill feels like they have travelled back in time. The Main Gate, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Vilhena Palace and the Palazzo Falson are impressive, old constructions and buildings that you shouldn’t miss.

  1. Comino

Of course, the island of Comino also deserves a mention on this list. It is the smallest island in the country, but it is as beautiful as the rest of it. It is mostly famous for its spectacular natural environment, and more specifically its lovely beaches. Comino is a paradise for people who love water sports and exploring the sea. The Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon and the Lantern Point are a few of the most popular spots in the island —as they should be.
