How has Technology Changed the Face of Business, and how will it Shape the Future?

Technology has undoubtedly changed the way that businesses are run, and it’s no secret that this pattern will continue to develop in multiple ways. Below, we’ve explained the origins of technology in business and outlined a few current – and future – specialised applications.

How has technology already changed business?

The first computers first became commercially available in the 1950s.

Up until that point, computing had primarily focused on mathematical and scientific programming. Once newer computers were specifically developed for business use, their functions were tailored towards unique processes.

What does corporate technology include?

Now, the scale of the use of technology in business is vast. As an example, online corporate communications platform Microsoft Teams exceeded 270 million users worldwide in 2022, according to recent figures published by Statista.

From the earliest stages of IT through to systems used in business today, functions include:

  • Email – electronic mail allows individuals to send written messages instantly, with the option to share a range of file types as attachments
  • Mobile applications – apps are designed to run on mobile phones and tablets and they play vital roles for businesses, from banking to messaging
  • Physical storage – for modern businesses, transferring data through a variety of USB connections is imperative
  • Online meetings – video conferencing online has become a definitive aspect of the modern business sphere, especially through Covid-19
  • Social media – when used effectively, social media improves the visibility, reach, and customer retention for businesses
  • Cloud storage – with online storage solutions like the Cloud, companies can create, store, and share documents

What does the future of business technology look like?

Even though there are certain businesses that still don’t need to utilise technology in their daily running, global economies are increasingly reliant on efficient services provided by companies who use reliable, tested technologies.

Some businesses are now deep-rooted in technology, especially those with employees who work remotely. A handful of the modern, practical applications of technology in business include:

Fintech

Fintech refers to different forms of financial technology, used to support businesses in the finance sector. From mobile banking applications to payment processors and cryptocurrency start-ups, the Fintech sphere is only just beginning.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) and the metaverse is opening up a large prospect for businesses. In particular, the Metaverse will allow businesses to meet up virtually, hold conferences and meetings, and model new products in virtual environments.

This could establish an entire new digital frontier for networking and collaboration.

Refined accuracy through AI

AI or Artificial intelligence has been used for corporate purposes since its development.

Once these technologies develop further, practical applications of AI will continue become more accurate and refined. In turn, AI will create streamlined processes and forecasts for companies across different sectors.

The future of business is changing. If you’re a business owner and you’ve been considering trying a new system, it’s always worth keeping up with your competitors.
