“Raising Awareness for Canine Mental Health: Chilli Chihuahua Opens up About Anxiety”

Anxiety, a prevalent issue among humans, has now come into the spotlight for our furry companions as well. Many people can relate to the experience of anxiety—shortness of breath, a tight chest, racing heartbeat, and a sense of the world growing hazy. But have you ever considered that your beloved pooch might be going through the same emotions?

Enter Chilli Chihuahua, a vibrant little canine strutting alongside his sidekick, Sukhi (an even tinier Chihuahua), and their content creator, Yasmin El-Saie. Life, however, isn’t always smooth sailing for Chilli. He’s a reactive dog, someone who battles anxiety and finds everyday situations overwhelming and stressful. “I never realized that dogs could have mental health issues,” sighs Yasmin, reflecting on their journey. “And it was Chilli’s anxiety that made me realize that I, too, am anxious! It was as if Chilli served as my mirror, reflecting the intense state I found myself in. Every time I stepped out of the house, I could feel my heart pounding, dreading the outside world. And I saw it mirrored in his tensed little body, bracing himself for the unexpected.”

Over the years, Chilli and Yasmin have forged a special bond, working closely together to support Chilli in any way possible. “I didn’t want Chilli to become so unmanageable that I’d have to leave him at home. I always wanted him to be part of my life as much as possible, respecting his needs and boundaries,” shares Yasmin.

To cope with their anxieties, Yasmin has devised strategies both for herself and Chilli. For instance, she never leaves home without a dog bag. “The bag serves as Chilli’s safe haven, a sort of cave with a door where he can retreat when things become overwhelming in public spaces. Additionally, his yellow gear signals to people that he needs space. He isn’t comfortable with strangers approaching him.” Embracing a yogic lifestyle, Yasmin incorporates meditation, sound therapy, and breathwork to support her own nervous system. “It’s fascinating to observe how Chilli responds to practices like meditation, Reiki healing, and sound bathing. He chooses which experiences he wants to partake in, and it’s truly incredible to witness his relaxation and receptivity.”

Years of learning and training have inspired Yasmin to share her experience of living with an anxious dog through the “I am anxious too!” campaign on Chilliwawa’s Instagram account and website. Each week, Yasmin and Chilli offer tips and insights on how to support and embark on a healing journey for both dogs and their owners. “I’m grateful that social media allows me to raise awareness about such an important cause. People are often unaware that not all dogs are relaxed and easy to approach. When a dog reacts unexpectedly, there’s often a lack of understanding, leading to judgment and labeling the dog as bad or aggressive. It would be wonderful if more people were aware of dog anxiety and reactivity, enabling them to navigate situations more effectively. We simply need to learn how to understand them better!”
