Ellie Burke composed ‘Filtered Reality’ as part of her university music dissertation, intending to raise awareness about the adverse effects of social media. Her approach involved researching personal accounts from individuals who have experienced mental health problems due to cyberbullying and comparison to the filtered realities depicted online.
“One girl shared how social media worsened her eating disorder, exposing her to negative content related to her condition. Another account discussed how cyberbullying had a detrimental impact on their mental health and well-being. An influencer talked about suffering from anxiety caused by sharing an unrealistic lifestyle on Instagram, feeling pressured to present an unhealthy version of herself. This is where the idea for ‘Filtered Reality’ originated,” explained Ellie Burke.
While acknowledging the positive aspects of social media, such as fostering connections, providing valuable information, education, and entertainment, Ellie aims to let others know that they are not alone in their struggles, regardless of their nature.
Ellie Burke aspires to be an artist who writes engaging and thought-provoking music, offering an escape for her listeners. She made her debut on January 20th with her enchanting single “The Moon” and followed it with her captivating sophomore single “Together,” which explores themes of devotion and love through a simple acoustic production accompanied by dreamy vocals.
Blending the lyrical style of soft pop with lo-fi beats, Ellie creates a unique sound, drawing inspiration from artists like Sasha Sloan and Olivia Dean. She can often be found busking and performing at various venues and events in Liverpool, where she is becoming recognised as a relatable and down-to-earth rising star.
Ellie’s inspiration traces back to her teenage years, where she found inspiration in Disney and Nickelodeon stars such as Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Ariana Grande. Her desire to “sing on stage like Hannah Montana and Demi Lovato” led her to pursue performing arts in school, participate in singing auditions, and study music production at university.
‘Filtered Reality’ and its accompanying music video will be available on streaming platforms starting from June 16th, 2023.
