Everton launch appeal against controversial Calvert-Lewin red card

Everton have confirmed they have appealed the decision to show Dominic Calvert-Lewin a straight red card during Thursday’s FA Cup draw against Crystal Palace.

Calvert-Lewin was sent off for the first time in his career with 11 minutes remaining at Selhurst Park, with Palace and Everton unable to be separated in a goalless draw.

The striker raised his studs in a challenge on Nathaniel Clyne but only appeared to make minimal contact with the Palace defender, seeing the ball kicked against him before recovering possession.

Referee Chris Kavanagh dismissed Calvert Lewin after being advised to conduct a pitchside review by VAR Michael Salisbury, provoking the fury of Toffees boss Sean Dyche.

“I’m a fan [of VAR] but we’re all aware it needs tidying up,” Dyche said.

“I thought it was getting tidied up but it seems to have stepped back a little bit. I remain a fan, but it is beginning to test my patience.”

If the red card is upheld, Calvert-Lewin faces a three-match ban which would include the replay against Palace as well as next week’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa.

On Friday, Everton confirmed they had notified the Football Association of their intention to appeal the decision before the midday deadline.

Calvert-Lewin has four goals in 20 appearances across all competitions this season, though he has gone 12 matches without a goal since netting in a 1-0 win over West Ham in October.
