DVLA’s 2024 List of Prohibited ‘24’ Registration Plates Unveiled

The DVLA has disclosed every number plate banned for the year 2024, including registrations such as *W24 NKR, SL24 GSS, and SH24 GED.

With the advent of March and September each year, new vehicle registrations commence, incorporating ‘24’ for vehicles registered post-March 1, and ‘74’ following September 1. Given the millions of plates issued with each new release, it’s inevitable that some inadvertently resemble or spell out objectionable words.

The DVLA meticulously reviews all new number plates, removing any that might be considered offensive from circulation.

Tony Clark, a number plate specialist and Marketing Manager at Plates4Less, made a Freedom of Information request to uncover the plates the DVLA has classified as ‘Too Rude for the Road’ for the upcoming ‘24’ series, set to commence on March 1.

The resulting list contains hundreds of combinations deemed inappropriate, including BO24 LOK, FA24 NNY, AS24 HLE, SH24 GGY, SK24 NKZ, and PE24 VRT.

Tony commented, “Rude or humorous private plates have always been popular, and can be a lot of fun. People choose private plates like these to customise their vehicles without personalising them. Some want to shock and others want to amuse their fellow road users”.

He further noted, “Sometimes, the DVLA restrictions just lead to people being more creative, and trying to find rude plates that the DVLA didn’t think to ban.”

Interestingly, Plates4Less has found that rude or offensive word searches are among their top queries, with an average of 345 daily searches. Notably, the ‘C word’ ranks as the 29th most popular search term, attracting around 21 queries daily, while ‘F*ck’ garners approximately 12.42 searches each day.

Tony added, “Customers use our website just to find funny plates and share them with friends, which we encourage! We even have a sharing tool built-in to make this easier.

“Outside of rude registrations, some of the most popular searches we get are names, like Sam, Dan, and Amy.”

Despite the DVLA’s efforts to filter out offensive registrations, Plates4Less has identified several risqué but permissible plates, such as S3XXX, OH69, FUN, OO69AAH, and PEN155. For more details, click here.
