Wrexham plan to increase capacity of the Racecourse to 50,000

Wrexham have revealed ambitious plans to increase the capacity at the Racecourse Ground to 50,000.

The north Wales club have achieved back to back promotions and will play in League One next season under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The presence of the Hollywood actors and the documentary Welcome to Wrexham has increased the popularity of the club, and they are eager to cash in by maximising matchday revenue via ticket sales.

McElhenney told Collider: “We have a plan in place right now that would eventually work from stand to stand, so eventually you get all four sides.

“It’s hard to say for sure, but we think we could get between 45,000-55,000 people in there.”

Existing work on the Kop means the Racecourse will be able to accommodate 16,000 once completed but McElhenney believes there is demand for more tickets to be made available, assuming they can get clearance from the relevant authorities.

He added: “In Wales, it really is a lot of red tape, and it’s just sort of figuring out ways to tick all those boxes and make sure that every single bureaucrat is happy.

“It is definitely a comedic point of consternation in the show how often we’re running up against bureaucracy.

“And of course, safety concerns and things like that, and all those regulations are there in place for a reason.

“But then there are some things that just seem like hurdles for hurdle’s sake. It’s a lot harder to build in the UK than, I found, almost anywhere else in the world.”
