What is the Sandwich Generation of Working Parents?

Every generation grows up in a slightly different world will encounter slightly different problems. One generation that’s particularly struggling in this day and age is the sandwich generation – a term coined because of being sandwiched by ageing parents and younger children who both need extra support and care. Typically, the sandwich generation is middle-aged (between 40-59) and has responsibilities for the generation below and above them.

What Makes This Sandwich Generation Different?

Many people with families will eventually find themselves looking after ageing parents as well as their children. However, this current generation has found themselves particularly stressed out. There are several reasons for this. First, increased lifespans have made it so that people are living longer, which, in turn, means more responsibility for the sandwiched generation, as their ageing parents live longer lives and require more support when they get sick.

There’s also the change to the younger generations, with millennials and Generation Z typically having less independence than previous generations. They are often described as the boomerang kids, as it’s common for them to move back in with their parents after moving out, which adds even more to the parents’ responsibilities.

Solutions for the Stress

It’s undeniable that the sandwiched generation is under a lot of stress. Who wouldn’t be having to look after their older parent while also trying to support their kids? It’s a lot to take on. The good news is there are solutions.

Considering Care

An ageing parent can be the cause of a lot of stress, and that means being unable to care for the ageing parent as well as one might want to. In this case, a care home might be the best solution, especially for elderly parents who struggle to support themselves, whether with cooking, cleaning, or anything else. Signature at Reigate Grange Care Home is a particularly welcoming and supportive care home, one that offers a beautiful environment, caring staff, and tailored plans that ensure the residents thrive.

Financial Planning

One of the most significant stressors for the sandwiched generation is financial problems. Even if they have earned all their life, they might find themselves financially struggling because they’re supporting their parents and children. A solution to this is meeting with a financial planner, who will be able to organise incomings and outgoings in a way that allows for savings, which is especially important for future retirement.

Pushing for Independence

It’s easy for the sandwiched generation to want to look after their kids as much as possible, but this may only stunt their growth. It’s essential to push kids for independence, whether encouraging them to move out, complete their own chores, or pay rent when living in their parent’s household. These moves can help the adult kids flourish in the long run and, in turn, place less stress on the parent.

There is no doubt that the sandwich generation is struggling on some level. While there is a joy that comes from having adult kids who live at home, it also means having more responsibilities. For the sandwich generation, it helps to come up with solutions that work for everyone – including yourself. Your life is important, too, after all!
