Brendon McCullum: England appoint new white-ball cricket coach

Brendon McCullum has said taking charge of England’s men’s white-ball teams alongside his role as red-ball coach “made perfect sense” after being appointed as Matthew Mott’s successor from January.

While McCullum has transformed England’s red-ball team since taking over in May 2022, England’s contrasting white-ball form led to Mott’s exit as coach in the format last month.

England managing director Rob Key has rescinded the decision he took after his appointment in April 2022 to separate the Test and limited-over coaching roles, adding that the schedule will allow McCullum to “dedicate the necessary focus to both roles”.

England cricket ‘restructure’

“For the last two years, constant clashes between formats have made it challenging for the white-ball environment,” said Key. “Fortunately, these are easing starting from January.

“We’re confident this restructure will bring out the best in our players and coaching staff.”

England’s red-ball team were in dismal form before the former New Zealand international arrived but have since won 19 of 28 matches.

Interim white-ball boss Marcus Trescothick will coach England for their series at home to Australia this month and in the West Indies in November, with McCullum’s first task the January tour of India.

McCullum: England talent ‘immense’

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team and I’m excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides,” McCullum said, describing his eagerness to work closely with Jos Buttler and the white-ball captain’s teammates.

“This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace… Rob Key’s vision for the future of English cricket is something that really resonated with me.

“The idea of a unified coaching structure, especially with the schedule easing next year, made perfect sense.

“The talent within English cricket is immense, and I’m looking forward to helping these players reach their full potential.

“My goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive and where we can continue to compete at the highest level across all formats.”

Brendon McCullum salary

McCullum’s current salary as red-ball coach is around £2 million, according to The i.

The outlet says the 42-year-old will receive a “significant rise” on as part of the new agreement.

“I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket,” said Key.
