- The Electric Car Scheme has highlighted the most affordable electric vehicles (EVs) now accessible through salary sacrifice.
- Models like the Nissan LEAF and Dacia Spring can now be leased for less than £200 per month, with the popular Tesla Model 3 starting from £303.
As new models launch and the used EV market grows, The Electric Car Scheme has announced a selection of the most affordable electric cars in the UK, reflecting a notable drop in EV prices.
The cost remains the primary hurdle for those considering an EV, with 68% of Britons indicating that affordability is a key concern, surpassing issues like running costs, reliability, and range.
To address this, EV buyers will be happy to know that in September, several vehicles will be available for less than £200 a month. This follows the renewed focus on the 2030 deadline for EV adoption.
Sub £200
With a monthly budget of £200, you might expect a decent family entertainment fund, or if you’re eyeing an EV, you could lease a new Dacia Spring for just £153 a month through salary sacrifice, leaving some room for charging expenses.
Alternatively, a used Nissan LEAF Hatchback is available from £195 a month, whereas a new version would cost around £260. The used car market has proven popular with The Electric Car Scheme’s customers, with pre-owned vehicles now making up nearly half of their sales.
Sub £250
For those seeking more variety at an affordable price, salary sacrifice schemes offer a wide range of EVs for under £250 a month. New cars such as the BYD Dolphin are available from £214 a month, as lower-cost Chinese EVs enter the UK market.
The used EV market offers even more choices, including the Renault ZOE Hatchback from £215 a month, the Hyundai IONIQ Electric Hatchback from £223, and the Vauxhall Mokka-e electric Hatchback from £236 a month.
Sub £300
When compared to the cost of many rail season tickets, especially for London commuters, this price range could allow you to lease four different new EVs from The Electric Car Scheme, including the Nissan LEAF, Mini Cooper, MG 4, and MG ZS.
Once again, the used car market offers greater opportunities, with the highly sought-after Tesla Model 3 available for just £303 a month.
Thom Groot, CEO and Co-Founder of The Electric Car Scheme, remarked: “There are some fantastic deals out there for EVs at the moment, and they are only becoming more affordable as more entry level models become available and the used EV market matures. These prices make EVs accessible to a far wider section of society and income levels, something that will be key in reaching the 2030 deadline.
“We know that the main concern for drivers is affordability, which was the biggest barrier for 68% of Brits, way out in front of any concerns around range, reliability or resale value. This is why we started The Electric Car Scheme, to make EVs more affordable and help increase uptake ahead of the coming phase-out of traditional cars.”
