Welch the Florist, a fifth-generation family business based in Nottingham, has received a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade in the customer excellence category at the 2024 Midlands Family Business Awards, held at the Athena venue in Leicester.
The Midlands Family Business Awards, now in their 12th year, are dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of family businesses across the UK. The awards ceremony, which took place on 3rd October, also supported a great cause, with all proceeds going to the Brain Tumour Charity.
Welch the Florist, one of Nottingham’s oldest family-run businesses, has been upholding its core values since its establishment in Long Eaton in 1920. When Tony Shaw took the helm as director in 1973, his passion for flowers and horticulture introduced a unique dimension to the business, bringing together expertise in both fields to create stunning floral arrangements.
Today, the business is led by Tony’s son Gareth, who has successfully merged six former florists into the Welch brand. Under his guidance, Welch has become Nottinghamshire’s leading flower delivery service, catering to customers through both Welch and Interflora.
Reflecting on the recognition, Gareth said: “This is the first time in our 104-year history that we’ve entered an award. Being shortlisted as a finalist came as a complete surprise, and to be highly commended among so many fantastic businesses is truly flattering.”
Charlotte Perkins, Group Managing Director of Wilsons, the organisers of the awards, remarked: “The judging panels had a tough time choosing winners across the categories. With so many exceptional entries, it led to several intense discussions about the Winners and Highly Commended. Every finalist should be extremely proud of their achievements and take time to celebrate their successes.”
Gareth added, “Being highly commended recognises the whole team’s dedication to excellence and is a testament to the hard work, passion, and expertise offered by the Welch the Florist team.”
