Mather & Co inspires, shares, and celebrates for National Sporting Heritage Day

Today commemorates National Sporting Heritage Day. This annual celebration aims to raise awareness about sporting heritage in the UK, using sporting collections and stories to encourage conversations across the generations and allow people to learn about the sporting pioneers that came before them.

Leading exhibition designers, Mather & Co, specialise in the creation of museums, exhibitions, visitor attractions and interior spaces, particularly within the heritage and sporting sector – below they share a handful of their completed projects for this year’s NSHD theme: ‘Inspire, Share and Celebrate’.

One of Mather & Co’s recent completed projects, R&A World Golf Museum, celebrates golfing past, present and future at the home of golf, St Andrews. The museum takes you on a fascinating story through six thematic zones that showcase the rich heritage of golf and how the game has evolved over time. It draws on a collection of over 16,000 items, which help tell the intriguing story of golf from its invention in Scotland in the 15th century to the global sport it is today.

Silverstone Interactive Museum is another project to share and celebrate for National Sporting Heritage Day. It tells the ‘whole’ Silverstone story for the first time and brings out the area’s social and military history for all audiences, not just motorsport fans, in both the design and storytelling. Through the experiences of drivers and engineers from the past, young people can see how the sport and industry has evolved in all aspects of design and technology.

The National Paralympic Heritage Centre is dedicated to the Paralympic Movement, telling the story of it from its inception using incredible testimony, objects, documents, and memorabilia including rare tickets, medals, sports kit, photographs, and programmes that were previously held in storage and not available to the general public.

At the National Paralympic Heritage Centre, Mather & Co’s design has taken accessibility to another level – 90% of users felt that this exhibition was the most accessible they had visited in the UK.
