How Do I Treat My Lost Senses After COVID-19? –NHS Guidance

A recent study reveals that continuous usage of vitamin A can help alleviate the symptoms of loss of smell during COVID.

The University of East Anglia claimed that the 12-week “Apollo trial” will treat people suffering from modified symptoms of lost senses due to the corona pandemic. For this purpose, they will make use of specialized vitamin nasal devices.

A study from Germany showed surprising benefits and role of vitamins; they further said that “we are doing a lot of research to know how it can help setting up the affected nasal tissues by the corona virus.”

The major symptom of COVID-19 is feeling tasteless as well as odourless.

If COVID persists for more than usual, you can also observe the loss of the senses called a post-pandemic syndrome. This is a broad term mainly used to explain the after-effects of a virus that may prolong for many days or even weeks.

It is worth mentioning that complete recovery from this terrible pandemic is a slow process. It may take from a few weeks to several months to get recovered. Almost every one in ten affected people reported a loss of smell and taste.

The side effect of losing smell buds is not being able to identify the taste of different things. The affected person’s smell and taste buds stop doing their job properly.

You should keep in mind that losing smell and taste is a recoverable problem. By following the instructions of the healthcare provider, the person can get recovered within days or weeks.

The main reasons behind this loss of smell and buds are high fever, sinus infections, congestion, allergy, and the development of mucous secretions in the nose. These are all symptoms of COVID-19 in any person.

To fight against such problems, NHS recommends some pieces of advice to regain your lost senses of taste and smell:

Rinsing the Inside of Your Nose

The most effective approach to dealing with this problem is thoroughly cleaning the nose’s inner side with a saltwater solution. It may discard the bacteria causing infection or hypersensitivity in your nose and make you feel better.

You can get the small packets and tools of saltwater solution from many pharmacies all over England. However, for your convenience, NHS suggests some steps to create this solution at home.

  • Boil water in a saucepan, and let it cool for a while.
  • Thoroughly wash your hands.
  • Take the bowl of lukewarm water with you and stand near a sink.
  • Take some amount of water in the palm of your hand and add a little amount of solution to it.
  • Gently place the solution in one nostril with the help of your finger. You don’t need to worry about the solution coming out of your nose after doing this. Keep doing the same process with the second nostril.
  • Repeat the process to check if it works.

It’s not necessary to use all of the prepared solutions at once. You can prepare the fresh one every day. Never use the leftover solution from the previous day – I repeat never.

Treatment For the Lost or Changed Sense of Smell

Whatever the underlying reason behind the loss of senses (COVID or any other disorder), it can be treated in days or weeks.

The NHS recommends a treatment called “smell training” to regain lost senses.

In this therapy, the affected person has to sniff at least 4 scents daily. The duration of every scent lasts for 20 seconds. The person is asked to focus on what he is doing.

Concluding our discussion, we suggest you seek medical advice if you don’t notice any change in your condition after 2-3 weeks. They will give you detailed treatment. The specialist will surely find the root causes of the problem and fix it as soon as possible.
