Young Rowers Make Waves in New Kit

A Northwich rowing team now look the part on the water after receiving a donation from Redrow for new kits.

Northwich Youth Rowing is part of the Warrington Youth Rowing initiative that’s designed to introduce young people in the town to a sport they may not have considered was accessible.

The programme currently works with around 70 students from local high schools and there are plans to increase this to 100 young people within the next 12 months.

The club, who train on the River Weaver in Northwich, aims to “take pupils on a sporting journey with the ambition to change their lives”. The team received £500 from Redrow’s community fund to purchase kits, easing the burden on parents to provide them for their children.

Club chairman Graham Jump said: “Our vision is to help to bring out the best in the young people on our programme, helping them to develop a whole range of skills that will serve them in their future, as well as improving self-esteem, self-confidence, resilience and life skills.

“We’re thrilled the team now has their own kit so they can really look the part and feel part of a team.”

The club currently runs 16 hours of sessions per week and each two-hour session is run by qualified coaches.

Graham continues: “The feedback from staff at our partner high schools has been incredibly positive. There are a number of reports of pupils who have shown significant positive change since beginning their journeys with Northwich Youth Rowing.”

Caroline Thompson-Jones, area sales manager at Redrow NW, said: “The community fund, linked to Redrow Hartford, aims to support groups in the neighbourhood that are making a real difference. Our developments are located very close to where the team practices on the river. It is a great initiative and the skills they learn while attending the programme will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We wish the team the best of luck in the future.”
