Medicash, a health insurer based in Liverpool, proudly announces the achievement of their remarkable milestone of 500,000 policyholders, coupled with a philanthropic initiative aimed at supporting the NHS.
Rooted in the charitable hospitals of Liverpool and founded in 1871, Medicash has become the oldest and largest provider of corporate health cash plans in the UK, spanning an illustrious 152-year history. The company’s recent announcement of surpassing the half-million policyholder mark signifies exponential and significant growth in recent years.
Experiencing unprecedented progress in 2022, with a new policy sold on average every two minutes, Medicash has effectively doubled its customer base in less than five years. Alongside this exceptional growth, the Liverpool-based provider has received national industry recognition, earning prestigious accolades such as National Insurer of the Year and Best UK Healthcare Plan Provider in the early months of 2023.
In celebration of this historic milestone, the Medicash Foundation, the company’s charitable arm, embarks on a monumental £2.1 million project to provide support to NHS hospitals and facilities throughout the North West over the next four years.
The first hospital to benefit from Medicash’s charitable endeavor is the newly established Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. Situated in the city’s unofficial Knowledge Quarter and built in 2020, the Centre offers cutting-edge cancer treatment to patients across Merseyside and Cheshire. As part of Medicash’s four-year project, the Foundation has revealed a partnership with the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, pledging funding for a Trainee Research Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) position. This appointment aims to bolster the Centre’s pioneering clinical trials and research efforts.
The selected individual will play a crucial role within the Centre’s research and development team, facilitating the delivery of revolutionary cancer treatments and strengthening the fight against this disease.
Sue Weir, Chief Executive of Medicash and Medicash Foundation Trustee, remarks, “The phenomenal growth experienced by Medicash in recent years is a direct reflection of the value we place on good health and well-being in the modern world. Our objective is to provide easy and affordable access to healthcare for as many people as possible, and I take immense pride in knowing that this philosophy has contributed to our incredible milestone. The same philosophy underpins this project, and I am thrilled to have the support of our policyholders and the wider community in funding vital NHS services.”
Emma Whitby, Head of Research Nursing at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, expresses, “As research nurses, our role revolves around providing holistic care that adapts to our patients’ needs while delivering state-of-the-art treatment. The funding provided by Medicash for our new Trainee Research ANP equips our team with advanced skills, enabling highly qualified healthcare practitioners to expedite the treatment process and facilitate quicker recovery for our patients. This donation is invaluable in enhancing our patients’ experience, and it presents an exciting opportunity for our entire team.”
By launching their latest funding project in their hometown of Liverpool, Medicash pays tribute to the company’s rich history. In 2017, Medicash was bestowed with the Freedom of the City of Liverpool, recognising its longstanding contributions to healthcare and commitment to charitable giving since 1871.
Sue Weir asserts, “This new position at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is merely the beginning of our project. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with additional hospitals across the North West in the months ahead to fund further positions. I am genuinely excited to witness the incredible impact these initiatives will have on their local communities and beyond.”
