Liverpool’s Robertson taking recovery from shoulder injury ‘week by week’

Andy Robertson is taking his recovery from a shoulder injury “week by week”, with the Liverpool left-back reluctant to put a timeframe on his return to action.

Robertson was forced to undergo surgery last month after suffering a shoulder injury in a collision with Unai Simon during Scotland’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in Euro 2024 qualification.

The 29-year-old, who made 34 Premier League appearances for Liverpool last season, has so far missed four league games for the Reds, though they have earned 10 points in that time.

Speaking to Viaplay during Scotland’s 3-3 draw with Norway on Sunday, a result which confirmed Steve Clarke’s side as runners-up in Group A, Robertson offered an update on his recovery.

“Yeah, I’m getting there slowly but surely,” he said. “Surgery was a success, which was the main thing, no complications from it.

“So far, so good. I think I’m about three weeks since my surgery now, so everything is progressing well. It’s just bit by bit, got to take it week by week.

“Everything has gone well up to this point and hopefully that continues and then hopefully before we know it, I’ll be back on the grass.”

Konstantinos Tsimikas and Joe Gomez have both deputised at left-back in Robertson’s absence, the former starting in Premier League wins at home to Everton, Nottingham Forest and Brentford while the latter played the role in a recent 1-1 draw at Luton Town.

Jurgen Klopp was unable to put an exact timeframe on Robertson’s recovery when he sustained the injury, and the left-back is still hesitant to do so, adding: “I’ve not looked that far ahead yet.

“I’m trying to not get frustrated, I’m not the best [when] injured. I’m trying to just take small wins every single week.

“I don’t want to put a game in mind and then I don’t make it, or I come back before then. I’m just taking it slowly but surely and then there’ll be a time to start pushing it.

“When that comes, I’ll try to get on the pitch as quickly as I can.”

Liverpool resume their Premier League campaign with a huge trip to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as they look to leapfrog rivals Manchester City at the summit after making a strong start to 2023-24.
