Luton boss Edwards bullish ahead of Liverpool clash

Luton boss Rob Edwards believes tomorrow night’s trip to Liverpool is a “brilliant marker” to gauge their progress this season.

The Hatters slipped back into the relegation zone last night following Everton’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace and head to Anfield on the back of a run of one point from their last three games.

But Edwards is bullish and insists it’s a fixture he and his players will relish.

“Tomorrow is an opportunity for us to get some points,” he said. “Liverpool are an amazing team home or away but Anfield is special for them. They are pretty strong at home.

“It’s a great game and a brilliant challenge for us against a great team, top of the league and at a fantastic stadium. It’s one that was top of the list at the start of the season.

“We’ve been performing well for a while now and we know how difficult this game will be but we want to compete against the best. It will be a brilliant marker to see how far we’ve come.

“We’ll try and commit to how we play and do our best. We want to be positive and see what we can get.”

Liverpool, whose lead at the top of the Premier League will be cut to one point tonight if Manchester City beat Brentford, have dropped just four points at home this season and Edwards accepts playing at Anfield represents one of the toughest tests in English football.

“We’ll take a draw but we are going there to try and win,” he said.

“Clearly we will have to defend really well and manage the ball well in turnovers and transitions. When we have opportunities with the ball we need to take advantage. There’s a lot we will have to do really well.

“We need to be ruthless in the box at both ends because chances will probably be few and far between.

“We’re looking forward to that challenge but we won’t go and sit back and wait for them to come on.

“This is as difficult a test as it gets.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Edwards, describing the job he’s done at Kenilworth Road this season as “insane” and Edwards was eager to repay the compliment.

He added: ”He [Klopp] is one of my favourites, I have to say.

“He’s got an amazing presence, personality and charisma. The way he leads his team and wants to play, with attacking intent, I’ve always loved it. They want to win and defend high and aggressively. Everything he’s done is so impressive.

“I hope it’s not the last time I get to go up against him.”
