Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool trophies felt like ‘nothing’… but managing club was ‘miracle’ and a ‘fairytale’

Outgoing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken about the curious emotions he would feel in the immediate aftermath of winning trophies at the club – and suggested he might have joined some supporters in celebrating with a drink but for the demands of his side’s schedule.

Klopp’s reign since October 2015 ended on Sunday with a 2-0 home win over Wolves, bringing to an end a tenure which took in the Reds’ first Premier League title for 30 years, winning the 2018/19 Uefa Champions League and three triumphs in England’s major cup competitions, among a haul of silverware.

“The interesting thing is really when you watch other people winning something,” Klopp told Liverpool’s YouTube channel.

“You think, ‘it must mean everything to them’. Then you do it and, in that moment, it’s outstanding, fantastic.

“But the next day, you look in the mirror and you’re the same guy, a day older. It’s just nothing; nothing happened.”

Klopp: Liverpool ‘special’

Klopp was joined by several key members of his coaching team for a special programme, ‘The Last Debrief’, organised by Liverpool.

“We have a WhatsApp group that changes name to include all of the prizes we’ve won,” said the German.

“We know how lucky we are. We have exactly the same enjoyment and all these kinds of things.

“The only difference is that we cannot drink for days after we win something because we usually have another game.

“It’s super, super, super special that we are sitting here [being filmed]. It is absolutely insane – a miracle, a fairytale, however you want to see it.”

The 56-year-old revealed he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season in a surprise announcement in January.

Liverpool won the EFL Cup for a second time under Klopp in February, proving to be his final trophy at Anfield.
