French Open 2024: Alcaraz wins again to set-up quarter-final clash with Tsitsipas

Carlos Alcaraz continued his quest for a first French Open title by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last 16.

The Spaniard won 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 against the Canadian No.21 to set up a quarter-final clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas in Paris.

Wimbledon’s reigning champion currently sits third in the world rankings but after an uninspiring showing in the Madrid Open, looked like he may struggle at Roland Garros.

But so far he has been back to his formidable best and looks to be enjoying himself on the clay courts.

After the win against Auger-Aliassime, he said: “I’m really happy with the performance today, I think I played a real high level of tennis.

“I’m happy with my serve, my shots and my movement on the court.

“I didn’t come here with a lot of rhythm but I believe in myself.

“After every practice and every match I’m getting better.”

Alcaraz was carrying a forearm injury into the major tournament and admitted he was still feeling pain during the first few matches.

But after a win against Sebastian Korda in the third round he said things were beginning to feel a bit more normal.

Last year’s semi-finalist looked back to his best against the Canadian and took advantage of the 23-year-old needing treatment for an injury in the second set.

He broke twice to lead 5-0 in the third set and served out comfortably to advance.

Tsitsipas overcame Italian No.35 seed Matteo Arnaldi 3-6, 7-6, (7-4), 6-2, 6-2.

After a shaky start that saw him fail to take any of the five break points he had in the first set, the Greek giant saved four set points and eventually broke his opponent in the 10th game.

The 25-year-old went on to win a tie-break and took control of the remaining matches to set up the mouthwatering clash against Alcaraz.
