Man detained after at least eight people stabbed in Southport

Eight people – including children – have been injured in a frenzied knife attack at a dance club in Southport.

Merseyside Police, along with 13 ambulances were sent to a property on Hart Street at about 11.50am. One of the events listed at the time of the time was a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class for children aged between six and 11.

Officers said they had detained a man and seized a knife but there was no threat to the wider public.

Patients were taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby Hospital.

There were eight injured people, according to the North West Ambulance Service.

Prime minister Keir Starmer said the news emerging from Southport was “horrendous and deeply shocking”.

He thanked the emergency services, adding that he was being kept updated as the situation developed and his thoughts were with those affected.
