The man dubbed Britain’s most controversial chef – TV’s Gary Usher – opened Sticky Walnut in Chester in 2011 but back then he was short of cash, which meant he had to choose between a new oven or tables and chairs. He picked the oven and never looked back. Since then, he has launched five more award-winning restaurants throughout the North West.

But Gary’s not the only good thing to come out of Cheshire. The county is home to an incredibly diverse range of eateries.

With everything from Thai and Chinese through to Indian and traditional English fare, visitors to the area and locals looking for some satisfying grub don’t have to travel far in the county to find the perfect place to eat. For a classic country meal out, The Frozen Mop in Mobberley hits all the right notes. It’s a charming 19th century country pub with a traditional British menu, log fires and a rustic feel. And coming soon, if you fancy wearing your best frock is Poco, which is opening soon in a swanky part of Hoole. The independent-owned business will specialise in small plates offering tapas, pincho and cicchetti.

Award-winning venues

In fact, eight Cheshire restaurants were named among the best in the North West and nominated for accolades in the Food Awards England 2022 – including Chester venue Upstairs at the Grill, up for the Best Restaurant accolade.  The team there is counting down to the re-opening after an extension. The region also boasts several Michelin star restaurants, including Covino in Chester, offering British cuisine and Da Noi, where the Italian chef pairs season-following dishes with the perfect wine. Cheshire also boasts one of the longest-standing recipients of a Michelin Star, the Chester Grosvenor, which only just lost its star for the first time since 1990, after the departure of Simon Radley as the executive chef.

The Church Inn, Mobberley

he Church Inn of Mobberley is a traditional yet stylish 18th Century country pub located on the edge of the village opposite the 12th Century St. Wilfrids Church. Mobberley is a leafy haven situated between the Cheshire towns of Wilmslow and Knutsford and on a straight country lane from Hale. It is only 8 miles from Manchester Airport and only 15 miles from the city of Manchester yet you are in the heart of some of Cheshire’s most beautiful countryside.

The pub has a main bar with intimate small dining rooms, there is a ‘boot room’ for a ‘muddy boot’ pint of ale. Upstairs sits the George Mallory room and the Chefs Library both available for private dining and meetings. There is no menu, the food served on any particular night will be informed directly by what is outside in that moment.

Our phillosophy is to give you many small courses (10-12) the dishes distilled down to their essence, only containing what it needs to.

We work collaboratively with our producers, and our menus change every four to six weeks to reflect what’s growing @ Field 28.

Owing to the produce-focused nature of our kitchen, you will find a robust offering of vegan and vegetarian dishes on each menu alongside the best of British seasonal game and seafood from field to coast. We can accommodate most food allergies with prior notice -please get in touch with us directly to discuss any food allergy concerns as not all allergens are listed on the menu.

Later this year, we will be opening our doors to our new location on Pepper Street, where we have a bit more room to stretch our legs. Until then, we are running a pop-up at the “little Chef’s Table”, our newly refurbished premises at 4 Music Hall Passage. Covino, Chester

Covino is a small owner-run wine bar & restaurant in the heart of Chester. We serve daily-changing menu of seasonally inspired small plates, guided by the quality and provenance of ingredients, with a real focus on simplicity and flavour. This is served alongside an extensive, yet thoughtfully chosen array of over 130 different wines from around the world, ranging from the classics, all the way through to the more left field.

Covino started as an even smaller wine bar & shop in 2016, situated just around the corner. At the end of 2018 we outgrew our humble beginnings and moved to Northgate Street, where our evolution into a restaurant began.


San Carlo Fiorentina

On the Fiorentina menu you’ll find spectacular seafood, meat, pasta and pizza dishes, however Fiorentina’s skilled chefs are best known for cooking the finest steaks in the region. In a league entirely of their own, steaks at Fiorentina are cooked using a special Robata wood-fired flame grill which greatly enhances their flavour. Fiorentina is also the only restaurant in the group to serve up traditional Sunday lunch. Add to this offering an expertly stocked wine list and you’ll be spoilt for choice when you dine.

San Carlo Fiorentina is an intimate and friendly restaurant, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, yet situated conveniently close to Manchester airport. In the summer months, the restaurant’s stunning terrace is also the perfect spot for alfresco dining. The Italian restaurant is open from noon until late seven days a week and offers free parking on site.
